Back in my ‘yoof’ I used to go by the motto ‘sleep is for the weak’ and ‘I can sleep when I’m dead’ however, as the years have slowly crept up on me the idea of going on an all-night bender and not sleeping scares me! I’ve finally realised that I need sleep to function like a proper human the next day otherwise it’s a disaster!
When I landed back from Australia in January my jet lag was an absolute killer, I’m talking being dead on my feet at 6pm and then being wide away a 3am. This went on for over a week and I have to confess I wasn’t the nicest person in the world during that time!
So I thought I’d share with you some of my top sleep tips which help me get a better nights snoozing. (Well when Nigel the cat isn’t bringing me mice at 4.30am!)
I try and stop aimlessly scrolling through my phone at least an hour before I go to bed, I find if I don’t my mind is too wired to shut down and sleep.
Phones out of the area
I’m sure I’m not the only one who has been tempted by a 3am aimless scroll through social channels when not being able to sleep but, this is literally the worst! Especially if it’s all recently kicked off online, it makes my brain go into full on overdrive and then any hope of sleep has been completely lost. I’ve started leaving my phone in my office to charge instead of my bedside table.
Invest in an alarm clock

This Works Deep Sleep Pillow Spray
I’m obsessed with This Works deep sleep pillow spray, it’s got a mix of lavender and camomile oils which together to act as a calming scent and helps me drift off into the land of nod without having to count sheep.
I think the main thing is to really stop with the screens, phones, laptops, iPads etc. The blue back light acts as a stimulant for the brain which slows down the ‘switching off time’ meaning it takes longer to drift off.
Do you have any tips for drifting off into a deep sleep?
